Dunkirk, New York Stage 2 BOA Study

As part of the team to develop the Step 2 BOA study, Urban Matrix conducted the urban design analysis, generated development alternatives for the vacant properties, established initial public realm design guidelines, and developed all the graphic for the public meetings and the final report. Dunkirk, New York is one of the only cities on Lake Erie where the downtown and waterfront are integrated along a main street, and waterfront access is at grade. This ease of access increases the opportunity for vibrant recreational and economic activities along the waterfront, as well as the reuse and upgrade of vacant and underutilized land. The redevelopment plan included a new design for Lake Shore Drive to be more conducive to pedestrian movement by introducing substantially more greenery, a median, and wider sidewalks. The improvements to Lake Shore Drive are intended to encourage private investment and redevelopment of waterfront properties and upland properties nearby. Guidelines were introduced for the parcels nearest the water to maintain view corridors to the lake and encourage active uses along the waterfront promenade. Memorial Park is to be enlarged to accommodate a bandshell, and the boat launch and boat storage areas were reorganized to avoid conflicts with pedestrians and bicyclists along the waterfront trail.
