The Takamichi Hair Salon was fitted into a long narrow loft space in the Bowery. The interior retrofit required a new electrical system, a new ventilation system, new lighting, sprinklers, plumbing and emergency hardware. The ceiling heights were very low so the new sprinkler trunk lines and the electrical wiring were placed in a vertical plenum along the north wall rather than in the ceiling.
The plan is open, consisting of essentially one large space accommodating 11 salon stations, shampoo sinks, and a reception area. The kitchen, toilets and service areas are all aligned along the south wall.
Urban Matrix was the architect of record and worked in direct coordination with the interior designer Sandra van Rolleghem to develop the construction drawings.
